PR Card Renewal

Permanent Resident Card

A Permanent Resident card (PR Card) is a piece of identification issued by the Canadian government to every permanent resident when they became a Canadian resident. Apart from being used as a government-issued identity, it is needed to enter Canada, especially for Canadian residents who possess foreign passports that require a visa to enter Canada. Although an expired permanent resident card may not matter much if you stay in Canada, the cardholder can’t use it as a travel document.

Permanent Residents Renewal

It is the responsibility of every cardholder to make sure their permanent resident cards are renewed when it is due for renewal. To be eligible for renewal, the cardholder must meet the physical presence requirement of at least 730 days of the five years preceding the card expiration date. Every permanent resident is expected to carry their card when leaving Canada as they may require a permanent resident card for re-entry to Canada. Of course, a permanent resident without a valid PR card may apply for a travel document application at a Canadian visa office to enter Canada, but this is not always an easy process as it may lead to loss of permanent resident status if the application is not well prepared.
