Skilled Worker Immigration

Understanding Foreign Worker Programs

A foreign skilled worker who desires to work in Canada has several options to choose from based on their qualification and immigration needs. While many immigrants may qualify for Canada Economy Class, others who have difficulties meeting the requirements can still seek employment in Canada through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program or the International Mobility Program.

Foreign workers who are hired by Canadian companies on a temporary basis will often need a work permit to work in Canada while those that qualify for one of the Economic Class programs or a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) will need to obtain Canadian permanent residence.

Economic immigration is one of the most common immigration options for educated, skilled, and experienced foreign nationals who wish to become permanent residents of Canada. In Canada’s Immigration, Economic class often refers to one of the following: Federal Skilled Worker Program; Federal Skilled Trades Program; and Canada Experienced Class.

Express Entry Programs

The Express Entry System manages 3 Economic immigration programs, incl  Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trad, Canadian Experience Class

Federal Skilled Worker Program

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is a point-based program that allows economic immigrants to relocate to Canada as permanent residents. The program considers applicants’ education, work experience abroad, age, ability to settle in Canada, and other factors for selection. Candidates are selected based on their total points scored.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FTP) benefits foreign nationals who have acquired skills and experience in certain trades and want to become permanent residents. Candidates are selected based on their certification in a skilled trade and readiness to settle in any of the Canadian provinces except Quebec. And unlike FSWP, the FTP is not a point-based system.

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is benefits skilled workers who have at least one year of Canadian work experience and want to become permanent residents. Candidates selection is based on their ability to become economically established in Canada, their work experience in Canada, and their readiness to reside in any of the Canadian provinces (except Quebec).

How The Express Entry Works

The Express Entry program allows foreign nationals to submit expressions of interest in some of Canada’s economic immigration programs, by creating an Express Entry profile and providing information on their education, work experience, language, and other skills. As cited above, the Express Entry program is used by Canada’s immigration authority to manage the Federal Skilled Worker Category, the Federal Skilled Trades Category, the Canadian Experience Class, and in some cases, the Provincial Nominee Programs.

In this immigration program, all candidates with active Express Entry profiles are ranked through the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and the highest-ranking candidates usually receive the Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canada’s permanent resident status.

Factors In The CRS Scoring

In the Express Entry program, applicants are awarded points based on some criteria that include:

  • Education
  • Language Proficiency
  • Work Experience
  • Arranged Employment
  • Age
  • Adaptability
