Understanding Family Sponsorship

Canada’s family sponsorship program allows for the sponsorship of spouses, common-law partners, conjugal partners, dependent children, children to be adopted, parents, grandparents, and other eligible relatives.

Spouse, Partner, and Dependant Children

A Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act can sponsor their spouse, partner, or dependent children to become permanent residents of Canada. The sponsor must be at least 18 years old, reside in Canada, and have enough money to support the family members and must be able to support them financially and make sure they do not need social assistance from the government.

Parents and Grandparents

A Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act can sponsor their parents and grandparents to live with them permanently in Canada. The sponsor must have received the invitation to apply, be at least 18 years old, reside in Canada, and have enough money to support the parent(s) or grandparent(s) in Canada

Relative (Orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild)

A Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act can sponsor certain relatives to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents under the Family Class. The sponsor must be at least 18 years old, reside in Canada, and have enough money to support their relative financially, meet their basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and make sure the relative doesn’t need social assistance.

An orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild only if they meet all of these conditions:

  • the persons are related to you by blood or adoption
  • both parents of the relative passed away
  • they are under 18 years of age
  • they are single (not married or in a common-law or conjugal relationship).
